HERITAGE , cz. II

Douglas Little

Don’t Call Him a Goth: At Douglas Little’s firm, D.L. & Co., pheasant’s-foot candleholders, skullshaped chocolates, and velvet-lined black resin boxes mix a dark 19th-century sensibility with sensual luxury. “Love can be horrible and the most amazing thing at the same time. The things I make are about that romantic dialogue.” Valley Boy: His fashion-photographer father and botany-obsessed mother would drive the ten-year-old Douglas to Japanese flower-arranging classes at Descanso Gardens. “I grew hemlock and belladonna in my room. I identified with the punk rockers of the plant world.” Scary Start: In 2003, he created “Thorn Apple,” a scented candle in a scalloped black glass shell—with the unheard-of price of $130. “When the first 1,500 candles arrived, I hyperventilated.” His line now includes dishes, stationery, and decorative objects. Next year he will explore erotic accessories.
